Brechfa Bunkhouse - Brechfa, South Wales

Brechfa Bunkhouse - Brechfa, has been converted to provide competitively priced self-catering holiday accommodation for individuals, extended families or groups on a working farm adjacent to Brechfa Forest in Carmarthenshire, South West Wales.

The converted barn sleeps up to 32 people between 7 bedrooms plus a large kitchen/dining room, lounge and drying room. There is a downstairs bedroom and shower for disabled visitors. Undercover BBQ area and a fire pit in the garden. The facilities are purpose designed to be walker, cyclist and equestrian and dog friendly as well as proving a flexible space for those who just want to relax or party with family and friends.

Brechfa Bunkhouse is a perfect venue for a holiday or weekend away – if you do not want to drive you need never leave the valley. The barn is fully equipped. I have put together suggestions on low cost activities suitable for each type of group visiting Brechfa Forest and Llanllwni Mountain and Brechfa village with its shop and pub is within walking distance.

Brechfa Forest is on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons national park and is within the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. We are just 25 mins drive from the M4 and are only 40 minutes from Swansea, 1 hour 15 minutes from Cardiff or just over 2 hours from Bristol. The area makes a convenient base for exploring all of South West Wales including Pembrokeshire.

Brechfa Forest was originally a royal hunting forest from the 6th century, but is now managed by the Forestry Commission. Brechfa Forest provides circular walks and world famous mountain bike trails as well as 18,000 acres of off road riding for equestrians. Or there is the open moorland of Llanllwni Mountain to explore. This part of Carmarthenshire is also famous for its fishing.

If you are a little more adventurous, then this is a stunningly beautiful area and is far less commercialised than a national park. Within a short drive you can be in the Cambrian Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire, exploring one of the local castles, or sunning yourself on the award winning 7 mile long beach - Cefn Sidan Sands.

If you are new to the idea of staying in a bunkhouses in Britain, a Welsh bunkhouse is a large holiday cottage designed for groups. Unlike a youth hostel you will not be asked to share a bedroom with strangers, and can book the whole building for the use of your group. The property is self catering, or catering can be offered. Comfortable accommodation, no membership is required,  there is no curfew and being truly independent can respond better to guests needs – offering even better value than a hostel, lodge or B&B. For guests new to organising a group weekend away, have a look at the What to Bring and Advice pages on this website.

Staying in a bunkhouse is about wanting more than just a bed to sleep in. It's a chance to meet old friends and family, to have space to socialise together, as well as providing you with freedom of self catering.  The large lounge and dining room are the heart of the building, unlike booking multiple holiday cottages on one site, staying in a bunkhouse provides you with large comfortable spaces for the whole group to share.
